Black Box Surfboards are hand built in the Great Lakes, and this is a noserider that will work well anywhere.
Matt Campbell is a surfer/shaper based in eastern Michigan. With a background in plastic and resin technology, Matt developed his own line of surfboard resin called Resin-X. Resin-X has many properties which make it ideal for use in surfboard construction and is used exclusively in the boards that he builds for us. Each of Matt's shapes is thoroughly tested in the Great Lakes and on both ocean coasts. Matt's collaboration with coastal shapers and glassers has helped enable him to develop a line of boards that we have been really happy with. Support your local shapers!
Here is Matt's description of The Perch:
"The Perch has all the bells and whistles in a modern step style S-deck. It uses a custom polyurethane blank with double red cedar stringers and colored green foam between them. It also has double 7.5 oz Volan fiberglass with a knee paddle patch. It has a multi-wood laminated tail block, panel period style color work, and vertical stripes for that clean classic look. The board also features Resin-X with a polished gloss that is taken beyond industry standard. A Heritage wood striped fin from True Ames rounds out the package. This is a board for the discerning customer who knows what they are looking at when they see it.
The Perch has a spoon type concave bottom that is typical of nose riders with a subtle twist in the concept that helps quiet things down a little in not so perfect conditions. The middle of the bottom has a slight roll blending into a little more panel V out the tail. The tail is thinned out quite a bit with a tail block being slightly more narrow than normal. In fact, the final dimension is very close to that of the Yater “Spoon”. This allows the Perch to fit into smaller, tighter beach break conditions and helps put a little more curve in the outline to fit into the wave face better for its size.
The step style S-Deck does several things. For starters, it flexes more when you are on the tip, changing the rocker and giving you added trim speed. It places more foam underneath the body when paddling. It changes the swing weight of the board to pull the nose around faster in pivot style moves. This highly functional deck foil has its place in history for good reason.
I thank anyone who gives this board any careful consideration. This particular board means a lot to me. The weight range is right around 175-230 lbs. However someone a little lighter could still get away with it."
